Recycling Revisions – 1/1/2019 would like to share information about recycling changes that are about to take place in many South Hills communities beginning 1/1/2019. Mt. Lebanon is one of these communities.


Continuing Recycling Requirements:

  • NO BAGS in Recycling Bins, Carts or Toters
    • NO Trash Can Liners
      • Place Recyclables Directly Inside Bin, Can, Cart or Toter
    • NO Grocery Store Bags
      • Take Clean Grocery Store Bags and Other Clean Plastic Film to the Grocery Store for Recycling


  • CLEAN Your Recyclable Materials
    • Rinse Lightly Soiled Containers with a Small Amount of Water
    • Run Heavily Soiled Containers through a Full Dishwasher Cycle
    • Wipe Out Sticky Containers with a Paper Towel and Compost the Towel in Your Home Compost Bin
    • Rinse Soap or Detergent Jugs/Bottles with Water and Use the Water for Handwashing or Cleaning Tasks


NEW Recycling Material Requirements:

  • Glass is Recyclable via Other Methods
  • Please Consider Signing the Letter Shown in a Previous Blog Post for Appeal to Municipal Leaders for Separate Glass Collection


  • All Types of Metal Cans and Metal Can Lids Over 2” in Diameter

  • Clean Aluminum Take-Out Containers & Disposable Pie Plates
    • Aluminum Baking Sheets and Reusable Aluminum Pie Plates are NOT Recyclable


  • All Types of CLEAN Mixed Paper
  • All Clean Paper Larger than a Postcard
  • Envelopes – Windows and Windowless
  • Hanging File Folders with Metal Hanging Bar Removed
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Paper Board Boxes or Containers (gray inside)
  • Soft-Backed and Hard-Backed Books if Backings are Paper
  • Stickers and Mailing Labels if Affixed to Paper or Envelopes
  • Tablets and Tablet Backs
  • Spiral Bound Notebooks


  • Plastic Nos. 1 & 2 – NO LIDS – Largely Bottles, Jars and Jugs
